A free R-Studio alternative for Mac and Windows
R-Studio’s demo can only save files up to 256 KB each, and full licences run from about $50 to $900. Free alternatives are DMDE’s free edition, PhotoRec and TestDisk, and Retrova for a graphical, cross-platform option.
R-Studio is a professional tool, strong at RAID, networks, imaging and a wide range of file systems. It is also demanding to learn. For an individual who needs to rescue files for free, Retrova, PhotoRec and DMDE cover many cases, but none matches R-Studio’s RAID or technician features.
What R-Studio offers
R-Studio, from R-Tools Technology, is aimed at technicians. It reads many file systems, rebuilds RAID arrays, recovers over a network and works from disk images, and it undeletes files with their names. When we checked in October 2026, the demo could display everything but saved only files up to 256 KB, and full licences ranged from roughly $50 to $80 for personal editions up to around $900 for the Technician edition, with updates included for a limited period. See R-Tools’ site for current pricing.
The interface is dense: it is built for people who know the difference between a partition and a volume set. That is a strength in a lab and a barrier at a kitchen table.
Free alternatives compared
| Tool | Free limit | Platforms | RAID | Names kept? | Interface |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Retrova 1.1.1 | None | Mac, Windows | No | Yes on readable file systems, and for deleted files on NTFS, FAT, exFAT | Graphical, simple |
| DMDE free | Limited files per folder (4,000 seen) | Windows; Mac and Linux builds | Yes in the paid RAID edition | Yes | Graphical, technical |
| PhotoRec | None | Mac, Windows, Linux | No | No | Terminal |
| TestDisk | None | Mac, Windows, Linux | No | Undelete on some file systems | Terminal |
| R-Studio demo (reference) | 256 KB per file | Mac, Windows, Linux | Yes in paid editions | Yes | Graphical, dense |
If RAID or a NAS volume is your problem, none of the free GUI options is a full match. DMDE’s RAID features and similar are paid or technician-level, so budget for that or consider a professional service. Retrova does not support RAID. Project pages: DMDE, TestDisk.
When Retrova is enough
- A single external drive, SD card or USB stick that will not mount or reads as empty.
- An NTFS, exFAT or Linux drive that you want to read on a Mac, or an APFS or ext4 drive on Windows. See reading Linux drives on Mac or Windows.
- A drive you want to image first. Retrova’s imaging is resumable and works in the same phases as ddrescue (healthy data first, then trim, scrape and retry), though R-Studio’s technician tools and ddrescue offer more tuning. See imaging a failing drive.
- A need for proof: Verify compares every copied byte and writes SHA-256 manifests you can hand to a client.
When it is not
Use R-Studio, DMDE or a professional if you have a RAID or NAS, a BitLocker volume with only a startup-key file or TPM, or deleted files on a file system other than NTFS, FAT or exFAT that must return with their folder structure. If the drive is physically damaged, stop and consider a lab; no software helps with failed heads.
What Retrova cannot do
The full list, so there are no surprises:
- Undelete with names outside NTFS, FAT and exFAT. Retrova lists deleted files with their names and folders on NTFS, FAT12/16/32 and exFAT only. On APFS, ext and other file systems it falls back to deep scan, so names and folders are lost and fragmented files may come back damaged. On NTFS, compressed or encrypted deleted files, and ones whose details span several records, are not listed.
- Encrypted drives without the key. Retrova opens BitLocker (password or 48-digit recovery key), LUKS 1/2 (passphrase) and FileVault or encrypted APFS volumes (password) only when you have the key. It cannot open BitLocker startup-key (.bek) or TPM-only drives, or the startup disk of a T2 or Apple silicon Mac away from that Mac. Decryption runs at about 100 MB/s.
- RAID and NAS volumes, APFS snapshots, bootable media and phones. Not supported.
- Code signing. Builds are not signed or notarised yet, hence the first-launch warning.
- Fragmented file carving. Deep scan finds contiguous files of 72 types, which is fewer than the 400 to 1,000 types some paid tools claim. Names are lost, and files stored in pieces may come back damaged or not at all.
The first-launch warning
Retrova’s builds are not signed or notarised with a paid Apple or Microsoft certificate yet, so the first time you open it you will see a warning. On a Mac, open System Settings > Privacy & Security, scroll down, click Open Anyway and confirm (on macOS 14 or earlier, right-click the app and choose Open). On Windows, when SmartScreen says “Windows protected your PC”, click More info, then Run anyway. You only do this once. The source code is public if you would rather build it yourself or read what it does.
How we checked
We read R-Tools’ and DMDE’s published information in October 2026 and the open-source tools’ documentation, and compared them with Retrova 1.1.1. We did not benchmark recovery. Competitor details were checked in October 2026 and are dated in the text. Vendor prices and free limits change often and many run permanent sales, so treat every figure here as approximate and confirm on the vendor’s own page before you buy.

Can R-Studio recover files for free?
The demo shows files but saves only up to 256 KB per file as of our October 2026 check, so it is a preview for larger files.
What is a good free R-Studio alternative?
For individuals: Retrova, PhotoRec and TestDisk have no recovery cap; DMDE’s free edition limits files per folder. For RAID, expect to pay.
Does Retrova do RAID recovery?
Not for RAID, which Retrova does not support. BitLocker, LUKS and FileVault or encrypted APFS volumes open when you have the password or recovery key, but not with a BitLocker startup-key (.bek) file or TPM only.
Is Retrova suitable for technicians?
It can help with read-only copying, imaging and verification with manifests. But it lacks RAID, undelete with names outside NTFS, FAT and exFAT, and its builds are not signed or notarised yet.
